Lyrics: This is a beginning and a middle and an end Nothing here is real it’s make believe and let’s pretend Life is like a game in which nobody knows the rules Why we’re here and where we’re heading on this ship of fools Life is an illusion but the ghost of it is real It isn’t so much what you think as how it makes you feel You can place a piece of art in public on display You can turn it off but you can’t make it go away Changes made along the way and everywhere between Clues are everywhere but no one knows just what they mean See beyond the here and now but not into the soul Life is in the baby steps you take to reach your goal You can mix a metaphor and not say what you did it for You can lose a round and then go on to take the game Make a choice and take a chance or just sit back and wait You are who you are and you’re the master of your fate Changes made along the way and everywhere between Clues are everywhere but no one knows just what they mean See beyond the here and now but not into the soul Life is in the baby steps you take to reach your goal -- Lyrics ©2002 Andrew L. Jackson

Lyrics: This is where I build on what I’ve earned This is where I cross all the bridges I’ve burned This is where Life intersects with Art This is where the barriers fall apart This is where the old gives way to the new This is a beginning and an ending too This is where I cash in and collect This is where Then and Now intersect I’ve waited so long to get to this place Tracing each new line on my face I’ve waited so long for this moment to come Just want to go out and get me some These are the days that would one day come These are the nights when my mind goes numb This is the place I wanted to be This is the face that once was me Life’s about change, and there’s no way around it The world can be strange but I’m glad that I found it Mystery and wonder, laughter and tears Discovery, recovery, hopes and fears But what have I learned in all these years? No one knows what they’re doing here; it’s not just you and me Life is still a mystery, and always will be If you can’t make sense of anything, take solace in the knowing Nothing makes sense anyway, so get on with where you’re going I’ve waited so long to get to this place Tracing each new line on my face I’ve waited so long for this moment to come Just want to go out and get me some These are the days that would one day come These are the nights when my mind goes numb This is the place I wanted to be This is the face that once was me I’ve waited so long to get to this place Tracing each new line on my face I’ve waited so long for this moment to come Just want to go out and get me some Get me some Get me some Get me some -- Lyrics ©2004 Andrew L. Cut the Cord 03:51
Lyrics: I get stuck in a rut ‘cause I don’t want to cut the cord I get scared of what I think I can’t afford So many things I’d rather do Than stay right here and placate you So many things I’d rather do Than stay right here and placate you Too many days and nights I just get bored The passions in my heart Just get ignored I wish that I could follow through On dreams that I’ve alluded to Wish that I could follow through On dreams that I’ve alluded to I hold back just because I think it’s right But I really want to have my way tonight By standing still I fall behind I’m going home if you don’t mind Standing still I fall behind I’m moving on if you don’t mind I get stuck in a rut ‘cause I don’t want to cut the cord I get scared of what I think I can’t afford So many things I’d rather do Than stay right here and placate you I wish that I could follow through On dreams that I’ve alluded to By standing still I fall behind I’m going home if you don’t mind -- Lyrics ©2001 Andrew L. Jackson

Lyrics: I only want to be remembered I just don’t want you to forget My only dream is to keep dreaming I haven’t got to that place yet My only hope is to keep trying I only want the best for us I just don’t know why you are crying I haven’t lost my will to trust And yet There comes a day When there’s simply nothing more to be said And yet I won’t forget All the days that you were mine There’s still so much of you inside my head The madness of a moment lost in time Locked in a box and safely kept If only you were here there’s no denying I’d watch your every movement as you slept And every time the moon reveals a mystery And every wish that hasn’t yet come true Will find its own solution in my memory The history of us, the mystery of you And yet There comes a day When there’s simply nothing more to be said And yet I won’t forget All the days that you were mine There’s still so much of you inside my head -- Lyrics ©2000 Andrew L. Jackson

Momentum 04:26
Lyrics: So you've lost your momentum And they'll say you've lost your voice But you're the author of your own life And you've made your choice You know who you are And what do they know Anyway anyway anyway anyway So now you can do your own thing Now you let the telephone ring Now you don't think to look back Now you throw more papers on the stack You know what to do Yeah, what do they know Anyway anyway anyway anyway You know who you are And what do they know Anyway anyway anyway anyway So you've lost your momentum And you've got no place to get to But you're the master of your own life With no one to report to You know what you want And what do they know Anyway anyway anyway anyway You know who you are And what do they know Anyway anyway anyway anyway So you've lost your momentum And they'll say you've lost your voice But you're the author of your own life And you've made your choice -- Lyrics ©2004 Andrew L. Jackson

Lyrics: Dream of nothing Full of emptiness Wanting something Not yet ready to confess Feeling ready To face nothingness Absent-minded Semi-consciousness Semi-consciousness This is where the poet finds his voice This is where the writer finds his muse This is where we let the space between Take another form and turn it loose Quiet moments In a lovely daze Simply waiting Hours and hours, days and days Trust in something That the cards you’re dealt Hold the key to What lay inside yourself What lay inside yourself This is where the poet finds his voice This is where the writer finds his muse This is where we let the space between Take another form and turn it loose What would you say If I told you You hold everything inside of you Dream of nothing Full of emptiness Wanting something Semi-consciousness Semi-consciousness -- Lyrics ©2003 Andrew L. Jackson

Lyrics: Searching for a place You can call your own Searching for a sound Searching for a tone Dreaming I’m awake Sudden change of view Dreaming I’m alone Dreaming I’m with you Taking it in stride Going for the ride Stepping out a while Going back inside Stories to be told Memories to hold Sit back and relax Come in from the cold Dreaming I’m alone Sudden change of view Dreaming I’m awake Dreaming I’m with you Dreaming I’m alone Sudden change of view Dreaming I’m awake Dreaming I’m with you -- Lyrics ©1999 Andrew L. Jackson

Lyrics: Brick wall smashing Party crashing Everyone cashing in on a phrase 30’s dashing Dandy bashing Old teeth gnashing: “It’s just a phase” It’s something he’s going though And we’re going with him It’s something we’re going through He’s out on a limb Lightning striking Kool-Aid spiking Discreet mic’ing and filming up close Girlfriends talking Toucans squawking Boyfriends stalking, burning the toast It’s something he’s going though And we’re going with him It’s something he’s going through And we’re going with him It’s something he’s going though The Surrealist is his own victim It’s something he’s going through He’s out on a limb Do you ever wonder where all this is leading Do you ever wonder where you’re going to Or are you just going along for the ride Without a care where it gets you It’s something he’s going though And we’re going with him It’s something we’re going through He’s out on a limb It’s something he’s going though The Surrealist is his own victim It’s something we’re going through We’re out on a limb -- Lyrics ©2003 Andrew L. Brainstew 04:18
Lyrics: I think my brain is melting But that ain’t nothing new I’ll stir it up hot in a melting pot To serve a nice brain stew My legs are made of rubber And my arms are made of glue My hands are all that I have left To write this verse for you So what the hell am I doing here And what am I going to do I’m staring out these windows At this never-changing view My bed is like a river And my body floats away So long my friends I’ll make amends Some other winsome day I really should get out more But I sleep the whole day through There must be some way of escape Or multiple undo So what if my brain has melted I didn’t need it anyway I’ve got cellular memory To get me through the day So what the hell am I doing here And what am I going to do I’m staring out these windows At this never-changing view My bed is like a river And my body floats away So long my friends I’ll make amends Some other winsome day I think my brain is melting now But that ain’t nothing new I’ll stir it up hot in a melting pot To serve a nice brain stew I think my brain is melting yeah But that ain’t nothing new I’ll stir it up hot in a melting pot To serve a nice brain stew -- Lyrics ©2002 Andrew L. Lyrics: Piece it together, quick, before it falls apart Pull it together, quick, before it fades away We’re just here for a spell, and then we’re on our way I’m prepared to take hell for all I’ve got to say I don’t care if you don’t too We’re better off this way I don’t know if you don’t too It’s easier that way The message should be very clear You shouldn’t have to think it through Beauty is attainable Come meet the new and better you I thought there was a message, but it was lost along the way I thought there was a reason for what I’d meant to say But all pretense is gone now for wanting something more Freedom is another word for nothing to ignore Peace of mind’s not hard to find You blank yours, I’ll erase mine Welcome to infinity I’m sure you’ll like it fine Had your piece and spoke your mind Now it’s getting hard to find Who you are and why you care Wonder were you ever there What did you expect – it’s me, your lifelong friend Just sit back and close your eyes This will make you beautiful again Why do you believe – you’ll break if you don’t bend Ready, get set, on your mark This will make you beautiful again You knew that it would come to this, but not how it would end Now you get a second chance And this will make you beautiful again What did you expect – it’s me, your lifelong friend Just sit back and close your eyes This will make you beautiful again This will make you beautiful again This will make you beautiful again This will make you beautiful again This will make you beautiful again -- Lyrics ©2003 Andrew L. Jackson

about

Rick Cuevas and Andrew L. Jackson have played music together on and off since they were teenagers in the mid-1970’s, but they achieved cult status with their 80’s bands Zru Vogue ("Nakweda Dream," "Cumulonimbus") and Science Patrol ("Bandit Ducks From Outer Space").

ZRU is an acronym for Zero Risk Unobtainable, something they grabbed at random from a newspaper headline in 1978. But Zruism is also a state of mind inspired by Dadaism; a way of looking at the world sideways, so that everything becomes much clearer, although somewhat askew.

And that's how Zru Vogue goes about writing, arranging and producing their songs. They use intuition, intention, chance, metaphor, poetry, and other important, arty, and useless things to create, construct, deconstruct, restructure, and piece together ideas from dreams and life (real and imagined) to make songs with depth, texture, and original style.
